      :Ionic liquids(ILs),as environmentally friendly solvents,have wide attraction due to their unique physicochemical properties.The composition,structures and properties of ionic liquids are briefly described along with an overview of the the synthesis of ionic liquids.Details on the advance in the application of ionic liquids for the extraction and separation of organic matters,metal ions,rare earth,radioactive elements and fuel desulfurization,etc.,were also elaborated.Besides,the current problems,research directions,and prospects of their application prospects were also briefly discussed.
